Pitru Tharpanam

Pitru Tharpanam is the offering of water — with sesame and darbha grass, to the departed of three generations on each side — made with the sacred thread over the right shoulder and the offering poured from the hand. It is the simplest and most frequent of the pitru rites, and the one a family keeps up between the annual shraddham.

Ritual guide

When is Pitru Tharpanam performed?

On amavasya each month, on the death tithi, throughout Pitru Paksha and especially on Mahalaya Amavasya, at eclipses, and at a tirtha when the family visits one. Many families also offer it at the start of a shraddham or pinda pradanam as its opening act.

The date, duration and sequence can vary by sampradaya, family custom and the sankalpam taken. Confirm these details with the Pandit before making arrangements.

Before the ritual

How to prepare for Pitru Tharpanam

  • Share the preferred date, the location, and the gotra and nakshatra details where you have them.
  • Confirm the samagri list and which items the Pandit will bring and which the family arranges.
  • Keep a clean, well-ventilated space ready for the agreed vidhanam, with fire safety in mind where a homam is involved.
  • Where the ritual is at a temple, check the temple's own rules and schedule before fixing anything.

Do not buy specialised items until the final list is confirmed. Requirements change with the ritual form, the mantra count, the venue and the number of Pandits.
