Pinda Pradanam
Pinda Pradanam is the offering of pindas — balls of cooked rice with sesame and ghee — to the departed, by name and generation, laid on darbha grass and offered with water. Pind daan in the north, it is performed within the shraddham and on its own at a tirtha, where families offer it for the whole line of ancestors at once.

When is Pinda Pradanam performed?
Within the annual shraddham; during the days after a death as part of the apara karma; at Pitru Paksha; and at a tirtha — Gaya, Kashi, Rameswaram, or a river confluence — when the family makes the journey for it. Some families offer it for ancestors whose rites were never done, on the guidance of their purohit.
The date, duration and sequence can vary by sampradaya, family custom and the sankalpam taken. Confirm these details with the Pandit before making arrangements.

How to prepare for Pinda Pradanam
- Share the preferred date, the location, and the gotra and nakshatra details where you have them.
- Confirm the samagri list and which items the Pandit will bring and which the family arranges.
- Keep a clean, well-ventilated space ready for the agreed vidhanam, with fire safety in mind where a homam is involved.
- Where the ritual is at a temple, check the temple's own rules and schedule before fixing anything.
Do not buy specialised items until the final list is confirmed. Requirements change with the ritual form, the mantra count, the venue and the number of Pandits.
